STRATA is the earth science–inspired music project of Icelandic singer-songwriter and geologist Gunna Lára.

Created in her old house in Hellissandur, the songs draw on geology, geophysics, planetary science and the natural world — but they are just as much about being human. Gravity, glaciers, volcanic forces, deep time and planetary origins become ways of exploring connection, change, vulnerability and our place on a living planet.

The name STRATA means layers of rock. It also reflects the layers of meaning within the songs — where scientific ideas and human experience often occupy the same ground.

The forthcoming debut EP 1st Contact will mark the beginning of that journey.
